That frees the space above the door, which is exactly what a high-lift or low-headroom garage needs, and it removes the rail that a car with a roof box would otherwise hit. It cannot be used on a door with extension springs, because there is no torsion shaft for it to turn.
Duty Cycle: The Number Commercial Buyers Overlook
Residential operators are built for intermittent use: a handful of cycles an hour with long rests in between. Commercial doors are rated by duty cycle, which describes how much of each hour the operator can run, and by cycles per hour. A door serving a parking level through a morning rush will destroy a residential-grade operator in a short time. Commercial-grade units with heavier gearing, continuous-duty ratings and a chain or high-cycle jackshaft drive are the correct fit, and they are normally paired with springs rated far beyond what a residential door would ever see.
Horsepower Is Only Half The Story
A larger motor cannot compensate for a door that is out of balance. The springs carry the door; the operator only moves it. Fit a bigger operator to a door with tired springs and the springs will still fail, while the extra force quietly damages the door hardware. Match the operator to the door first, then make sure the springs are matched to the door weight.
